A lot of the IT jobs in Dubai that are listed online or in the local newspaper require an IT certification to prove that you are competent in a certain technology.

The majority of IT jobs concerned with systems administrator and network engineer positions advertised in the Gulf News state that a CCNA or a MCSE is “favourable”.

There are a number of online courses and training institutes which will help you study for one of these qualifications, which require no prerequisites. Although the MCSE in Windows 2003 does recommend you have at least 1 year of implementing and administering network and desktop operating systems.

Which course is best for you?

It all depends on the type of job you will be going for in Dubai. For instance if you are interested in a Help Desk technician or computer technician job then you best route would be to take an A+ Hardware / Software course. This will set you up with the basics in computer support and open a number of IT doors.

If you’re a bit more experienced then try tackling the 7 exams for the MCSE 2003 path. You will have a much greater chance of landing a Network Administrator, Technical Support Engineer, Systems Analyst, Systems administrator, or Technical Consultant job in Dubai with this particular qualification.

The Cisco CCNA certification is another one that pops up regularly on job boards. If you’re more attuned to computer hardware and networking devices and hope to land a network engineer or administrator type role then this is the one to go for.

Some of the higher level managerial type positions (i.e project manager, IT systems manager) require either a PMI or an ITIL certification. These two certs do require work experience in their respective fields to qualify for the course.

So, if you have the time and money, doing a MCSE or a CCNA course and adding these letters to your CV will make your skills stand out (by popping up on recruitment company keyword searches) and hopefully land you an IT job in Dubai.
